History
Constructed between 1480 and 1515 on the site of the former main synagogue and part of the Jewish quarter, the convent was founded by Leonor de Pimentel and Álvaro de Zúñiga. Legend has it that they did so in gratitude and thanks for a miracle which saved the life of their son, Juan de Zúñiga, who would later become Cardinal of Seville.
Architecture
Convent Church
The church of the former convent of San Vicente Ferrer, now home to the Brotherhood Church, is the second largest church in Plasencia after the Cathedral. Noteworthy features include the Main Mannerist Altarpiece (16th century) and the late Baroque organ by Benito Baquero (1815).
Convent cloister
Isabelline style with remains of Mudejar coffered ceilings, sgraffito, and mural paintings. It is currently the Plasencia National Tourism Parador.
Air Staircase
Stunning piece of architectural work by Juan de Ezquerra and Juan Álvarez (1577). It can be seen in the cafeteria of the Plasencia National Tourism Parador.
Chapter Hall
Covered with an 8-pointed ribbed stellar vault, the burial site of friars. It is located in the cloister of the former convent, currently the Plasencia National Tourism Parador.
Refectory
Decorated with Talavera tiles and emblems of the convent’s founders, it currently houses the dining room of the Plasencia National Tourism Parador restaurant.
