Brotherhood of Jesus of Nazareth. Brotherhood of Silence

HISTORY OF THE BROTHERHOOD

The Brotherhood of Jesus of Nazareth is one of the oldest in Plasencia. Its titular sculpture is the Nazarene of the Cathedral. The sacred effigy is the figure most worshipped by the people of Plasencia. It is known in the city as the Brotherhood of Silence, due to the promise made by the brotherhood members to remain silent during the procession. It was founded on 13 March 1930, due to a procession to the main square as a result of certain missions in 1928. It currently has approximately 870 members.

Brotherhood of Silence

Interesting facts

For the first seven years, on Holy Wednesday, a solemn procession is undertaken from the cathedral to the Church of Santa Ana, followed by a procession on Holy Thursday. Such were the numbers that accompanied the Nazarene in this procession that it was decided to establish a separate procession to be held on Holy Wednesday. In 1959 the effigy of Our Lady of Sorrows of Hope was added as co-titular sculpture of the Brotherhood. In 1987 the image of the Ecce Homo was added to the Brotherhood, and in 2014 adding the procession of the Garden of Olives.

Every Holy Wednesday, the cathedral square fills with devotees and visitors to watch the departure of the Nazarene, a poignant moment, as the 50 brothers carrying same must carry the religious float almost at ground level freehand due to its height.

Religious Floats

  • Ecce Homo

The Ecce Homo religious float is a polychrome wooden effigy of an anonymous 17 th century artist. It has oriental features, and, curiously, has tears, something which is rather unusual in the Christs, it was worshipped in the convent of San Ildefonso. After that convent’s closing, the effigy was moved to the church of Santo Domingo to be added to the permanent exhibition of religious floats of Plasencia’s Holy Week. The sculpture is a bust which is carried in procession on a column and its entirety is carried on a throne from the Crespo  brothers’ workshops.

  • Our Father Jesus of Nazareth

A clothed figure sculpted by the maker of religious images from Extremadura Joséf Jiménez Sánchez, born in Logrosán in 1693. One of the oldest sculptures of the Holy Week in Placencia, it is worshipped all year round in the Cathedral. The sacred effigy has six mantles, the oldest of which dating back to 1900. It is carried in procession on a silver throne from the Meneses factory, dating from 1930, to which a fine wood throne was later added, the work of the Crespo Brothers’ Workshop in Plasencia. The cross carried by the Nazarene dates back from 1974, a gift from Mr. Antonio Crespo Yañez.

  • Our Lady of Sorrows of Hope

Carved in solid, polychrome, and gold-plated wood in 1959, sculptured by Mr. Luis Marco Pérez, professor of sculpture at the Fine Arts School of Madrid and winner of the National Sculpture Prize. it has two green velvet corduroy mantles with gold embroidery. The throne on which it is carried in procession was also designed by the sculptor himself. It was carried on wheels until 2005, when it was decided to carry same on the shoulders of 60 procession bearers.

  • The Agony in the Garden

The Agony in the Garden is a Tableau procession float made up of two clothed figures representing Jesus Christ and the angel with the chalice, a work by Mr. José Gerique dating from the late 19 th century. This religious float has been carried in procession during Plasencia's Holy Week for over 80 years and has set out in procession with various brotherhoods. Since 2014, the year in which the religious float was restored, it has been in carried procession with the Brotherhood of Silence on Holy Wednesday.
