The Brotherhood of The Sacred Supper

HISTORY OF THE BROTHERHOOD

The Brotherhood of the Sacred Supper of Plasencia dates back to 1930, in response to the concerns and desires of several institutions and associations of Plasencia to strengthen and enrich Holy Week. At that time, the Caja de Ahorros de Plasencia (Plasencia Savings Bank) took the initiative of founding the Brotherhood and acquiring a processional religious float a gesture which would mark a milestone in the city’s history.

Religious Floats

  • Holy Supper

The Plasencia Holy Supper religious float is a majestic monumental sculpture made by José Jerique in 1930 depicting Jesus seated with the 12 apostles. It is composed of thirteen figures, approximately 1.60 metres tall, made of pine wood, linen cloth and oil polychrome. In the early years it was carried in procession on the shoulders of 22 people, until, the year is uncertain, it was installed on a wheeled float. In 2005, to commemorate the 75 th anniversary, new bedplates were installed so that it could once again be carried on the shoulders of approximately 60 procession bearers in a single relay. The religious float was restored in 2008 at the Restauraciones Llorente workshop in Pláceres. The starting point of the intervention and its final objective was to restore the maximum readability to the work, without changing same, using products of proven effectiveness, compatibility, stability and reversibility. Therefore, under the instructions of María Jesús Manzanares, the restoration of the titular religious float of the Brotherhood of the Holy Supper commenced. This impressive religious float can be seen all year round in the Santo Domingo Brotherhood Church.

  • Our Lady of Love

The Our Lady of Love was acquired by the Brotherhood in January 1997, from the “Santa Rufina” Religious Art Workshops in Madrid, the work of the sculptor Mr. José Sánchez. It is a clothed figure made of pine wood. The throne which carries the effigy were selflessly made by the Member Brother Mr. Miguel Ángel García Cortés. The Virgin is carried on the shoulders of 24 profession bearers and was part of the processional parades for the first time in 1997. Since then, women wearing the traditional Spanish mantilla accompany the effigy in its penitential procession. Our Lady of Love is worshipped all year-round in the chapel of the Holy Sacrament in the Church of El Salvador.
