Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of Good Death

HISTORY OF THE BROTHERHOOD

The Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of the Good Death was founded in 1998 when the founding brothers decided to create a Castilian procession in Plasencia, one which would march with contemplation, austerity and penitence. With these values, which are reflected in its Franciscan habits and the fact that it undertakes its procession without religious floats or music, the Brotherhood parades every Good Friday morning with the Christ of the Good Death.

Interesting facts

The procession of the Holy Christ of Good Death is one of the most poignant and spectacular of Plasencia’s Holy Week. The Brothers, who march in austere Franciscan attire, undertake one of the longest processions in the city, carrying only the Christ on their shoulders and accompanied by a bell. During the penitential procession, the miserere is sung, creating a unique atmosphere of contemplation and sorrow.

  • It starts at dawn.
  • Four brothers carry the Christ, two on their shoulders and two by hand.

Attire: Franciscan attire in honour of the Order of Saint Francis.

Symbol: Bone-coloured recumbent cross on a brown Franciscan background.

Religious Floats

  • Holy Christ of the Good Death

The Holy Christ of the Good Death is a 16 th century sculpture depicting a Crucified Christ in a slumped position. It is made of polychrome wood and measures 257 x 150 x 41 cm. Created by an unknown artist, and there is little documentation as regards the effigy which, for quite some time, was exhibited in the Church of San Martín. It is currently located in the right nave of the transept of the Church of San Esteban, on a gold-leaf Baroque altarpiece and a leaden sky background. The sculpture was restored by Mrs. Ana Gallego Ollero, who also carried out consolidation treatments, surface cleaning, removal of oxidised varnish, crack sealing and protection.
