Brother of the Most Holy Crucifix and Descent from the Cross

HISTORY OF THE BROTHERHOOD

The Brotherhood of the Most Holy Crucifix and Descent from the Cross already existed in the 16th century, although the brotherhood disappeared and was re-founded in 1925, the year in which the Plasencia Chamber of Commerce and Industry advocated the purchase of the monumental Descent from the Cross religious float. Around the same period, the industrialist Mr. Julian Serrano Herrero commenced to carry the Christ of Agony from the Church of San Vicente Ferrer in the same procession, accompanied by his relatives and numerous employees. Years later, they joined the Brotherhood of the Descent from the Cross.

La Cofradía del Santísimo Crucifijo y Descendimiento de la Cruz ya existía en el siglo XVI

Religious Floats

  • Christ of the Seven Words

The Christ of the Seven Words is the new titular sculpture of the Brotherhood of the Descent from the Cross. This new effigy replaces the Most Holy Christ of Agony which has been carried in procession with the Brotherhood since the 1950s and which, due to its artistic value, it has been decided to be preserved and protected. The new sculpture of the Most Holy Christ of the Seven Words is created by the Sevillian maker of religious images Mr. Juan Manuel Montaño in royal cedar, following the classical canons of Baroque sculpture. It is a full-sized Christ sculpture, 185 cm high, with a carved crown of thorns, nails in the wrists and a very pronounced anatomy, pre-cadaverous in appearance. The cross, sculpted in wood, is a tree-like cross varnished in two shades of walnut and has a total height of 4 metres.

  • Descent from the Cross

The Descent from the Cross is a monumental composition of seven figures which traverses the streets of Plasencia every Good Friday on the shoulders of the brothers of the Brotherhood of the Most Holy Crucifix and Descent from the Cross The religious float is made up of the effigies of Jesus Christ, Mary, Saint John, Mary Magdalene, Arimathea, Nicodemus and Stephanus. Six of these are the work of the Levante sculptor Mr. José Gerique and Mary Magdalene by the Madrid sculptor Mr. Manuel Romero Ortega. It is one of the Plasencia’s ironic religious floats due to its size and weight (currently weighing over 1,000 kg). For many years, it was undertaken on wheels but nowadays it is carried on the shoulders of 50 procession bearers. Its two and a half metres width, three metres length and three metres and sixty centimetres height make the route exceedingly difficult to undertake, especially in the city’s narrow streets. The thrones, with their four ash wood lanterns on the corners, were made in the Benavente Cooperative carpentry workshops.

  • Our Lady of Sorrows

The Our Lady of Sorrows religious float is a beautiful Pietà, a replica of that which existed in a Murcian village by the Master Salcillo, carved by Mr. José Gerique in 1903 and owned by the Brotherhood of the True Cross. It is an effigy of extraordinary beauty which is breathtaking. The Cross stands four metres high, and at its feet are the effigies of the Virgin Mary and the recumbent Christ. This magnificent ensemble is carried on the shoulders of 36 brothers and their slow and measured pace is noteworthy, accompanied by the excellent marches of the Symphonic Band of the City of Plasencia. The current thrones are also the work of the Benavente Cooperative workers, donated to the Brotherhood by the Conejero family of Plasencia.
