Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of Calvary

HISTORY OF THE BROTHERHOOD

The Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of Calvary is preparing to experience its first Penitential Procession in 2025, an event which marks a milestone in its short but significant history. Founded as a Sacramental Brotherhood in 2017, the Brotherhood of Calvary is based in the El Salvador Parish Church where its titular sculpture resides. The three fundamental cornerstones which define same are: worship, constitution and charity.

Interesting facts

This Brotherhood is the latest to join Plasencia’s Holy Week, which will celebrate its first Penitential Procession on Palm Sunday in 2025. Just one year earlier, on 17 March 2024, its titular sculpture was blessed: the Holy Christ of Calvary, the work of the Sevillian artist Mr. Fernando José Aguado. The Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of Calvary is a young Andalusian-inspired Brotherhood, which means that the costaleros (or procession bearers) walk under the religious float and it is not borne on poles as is the case with Castilian-style Brotherhoods.

  • It is the newest of Plasencia’s Brotherhoods
  • It has over 300 members.
  • Its black tunic with esparto grass belt is characteristic
  • Andalusian-style procession

  • Holy Christ of Calvary

The Holy Christ of Calvary is the titular sculpture of the Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of Calvary and Our Lady of Sorrows. It is a masterpiece from the Sevillian artist Mr. Fernando José Aguado. Life-size, it is made of polychrome cedar wood, painted in oil, with a natural acacia crown of thorns. It is a classic work full of naturalism, a symbol of our devotion and the representation of our spiritual journey.
