Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of The Column

HISTORY OF THE BROTHERHOOD

The Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of the Column was founded in 1993 and undertook its first procession two years later. One of the Brotherhood’s distinguishing features is the addition of horses in its processional parades. In 1999, the National Police Force was appointed Brotherhood Principal and since then, a cavalry lancer squadron has led the procession.

Religious Floats

  • Dolorosa de San Nicolás

The Dolorosa de San Nicolás is a clothed effigy from the Castilian school, by an anonymous artist, dating back to the 17 th century. The peaceful countenance on the face of this suffering Virgin, which was worshipped until 1995 in the parish church of San Nicolás, is especially poignant.

  • Holy Christ of the Column

The Holy Christ of the Column is the titular religious float of the Brotherhood of the same name which traverses through the historic district of Plasencia. It is a life-size polychromewood sculpture made by Mr. Manuel Romero Ortega in 1995.

  • The Flagellation

The Flagellation religious float also known as "Los azotes" (The Whipping), is the work of the Valencian sculptor Mr. José Jerique and dates back from the 19 th century. It depicts Jesus being whipped by two executioners. It is a Tableau procession float made of polychrome cedar wood and is inspired by a Salzillo religious float of whom Jerique was a disciple. The religious float is owned by the Delgado family and parades on Holy Tuesday with the Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of the Column.
