Brotherhood of the Holy Way of the Cross

HISTORY OF THE BROTHERHOOD

Founded in 1943 by the Bishop Feliciano Rocha Pizarro, the Brotherhood of the Most Holy Way of the Cross was founded with the aim of bringing the processional floats closer to future priests. During the early years, men and women undertook the Way of the Cross separately, both concluding at the Cathedral. The men would undertake the procession the first fall of Our Father Jesus of Nazareth, and the women Our Lady of Solitude. Nowadays men and women undertake the procession together carrying the Nazarene of the Young and the Forsaken.

The Way of the Cross

Interesting facts

The Way of the Cross is a singular procession, as the brotherhood members do not wear tunics and the procession starts at 6.30 a.m. on Good Friday morning. In early years there were two Ways of the Cross, one for women which departed from the church of San Vicente Ferrer and another for men which departed from the Church of Santa Ana; following different routes and ending at the Cathedral. During the 1960s and 1970s it was on the verge of disappearing but in 1978 the procession was restored and the Brotherhood of the Holy Way of the Cross was created. In 2016, the effigy of Our Father Jesus of Nazareth was added with the title of Nazarene of the Young and the Forsaken.
