Descent from the Cross

Christ of the Seven Words

cristo de las siete palabras

The Christ of the Seven Words is the new titular sculpture of the Brotherhood of the Descent from the Cross. This new effigy replaces the Most Holy Christ of Agony which has been carried in procession with the Brotherhood since the 1950s and which, due to its artistic value, it has been decided to be preserved and protected. The new sculpture of the Most Holy Christ of the Seven Words is created by the Sevillian maker of religious images Mr. Juan Manuel Montaño in royal cedar, following the classical canons of Baroque sculpture. It is a full-sized Christ sculpture, 185 cm high, with a carved crown of thorns, nails in the wrists and a very pronounced anatomy, pre-cadaverous in appearance. The cross, sculpted in wood, is a tree-like cross varnished in two shades of walnut and has a total height of 4 metres.
