The Descent from the Cross is a monumental composition of seven figures which traverses the streets of Plasencia every Good Friday on the shoulders of the brothers of the Brotherhood of the Most Holy Crucifix and Descent from the Cross The religious float is made up of the effigies of Jesus Christ, Mary, Saint John, Mary Magdalene, Arimathea, Nicodemus and Stephanus. Six of these are the work of the Levante sculptor Mr. José Gerique and Mary Magdalene by the Madrid sculptor Mr. Manuel Romero Ortega. It is one of the Plasencia’s ironic religious floats due to its size and weight (currently weighing over 1,000 kg). For many years, it was undertaken on wheels but nowadays it is carried on the shoulders of 50 procession bearers. Its two and a half metres width, three metres length and three metres and sixty centimetres height make the route exceedingly difficult to undertake, especially in the city’s narrow streets. The thrones, with their four ash wood lanterns on the corners, were made in the Benavente Cooperative carpentry workshops.
